Everything’s Better with Cheese: Why Cheesy Clichés and Taglines Work

Clichés have a bad rap, man. Clichés are overused, played out, worn out, and tired … because they are true. Where are my fellow Marketing majors? Am I the only one who thinks one of the most fun parts of product / project development is coming up with a snazzy title / tagline, and logo? I am all about the packaging.
… And sometimes a rhyme … can be right on time [that rhyme was not done on purpose – but truly for lack of a better word]. A good rhyme can be effective, and put a little dip in your hip, and add some fun & rhythm to many a situation. Rhymes can also help you remember important things.

Use a good cliché or motto to your advantage: Give your next great effort (aka your New Years Revolution] a little buzz phrase, and mean it!

Again [Marketing Majors cosign with me once more ]… a promotion blitz ain’t worth its weight in salt if there’s no action, and no product to back it up. Be careful, and you could end up in an “all sizzle, and no steak” situation… leaving you NOWHERE.

In my case, there’s definitely more than one dusty, faded and fallen “party banner” in my mind – ablaze with some phrase I made up to motivate myself that year, but to no avail.
I guess I just wasn’t ready.

2002 I wasn’t thinkin’ about you (intentions to volunteer, and serve others were overshadowed by preparation for graduation from college). Turns out that 2003 wasn’t all about me. 2008 was good but not great.
But when I said I was gettin’ my butt in line for 2009, I put some walk with that talk. . .  and let me just go ahead and claim it now – I plan to WIN in 2010. Let’s step out on faith. Keep your eye on the prize, but enjoy the journey! Hey, you may not make it all the way there in a square year, but you will be well on your way, and closer than you were before. If a cheesy tagline sets the pace, and keeps you on track, then so be it! Do whatever works for you. Shoot, the corporate giants know what’s up. Some of their slogans inspire me on the daily. Match the Company to its motto:

Just Do It . . .Because I’m Worth It . . . Do More . . .We Try Harder . . .Have It Your Way . . . I’m Lovin’ It . . .Don’t Get Mad, Get Glad . . .The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection . . . Taking Care of Business
. . .you get the point.

Here comes the REALLY cheesy part … so cheesy, infact – the suggestion that follows could actually make you angry if you’re really down in the dumps, but do it anyway. Look in the mirror and tell yourself you’re worth it. I'm no Tony Robbins, but I know something about self motivation.

If you don’t do it, who else will? We talk ourselves down so easily – without shame. And all of a sudden we want to get sheepish, when we look in the mirror and say something good? Just keep doing it until you don’t feel weird anymore. Eventually your self-talk will ring true.

Now give yourself a pat on the back, turn that frown upside down, put on a happy face, step outside the box, and create your own reality. Because only YOU can prevent forest fires.

. . .okay that was a stretch . . .
